Did you really think that Jesus Obama would save you?
Fri Jun 20, 2008 at 05:21:47 PM PDT
I'm amazed at the reaction in the blogosphere today.
I'm more amazed at the excuse making for Barack Obama's total lack of leadership on FISA / illegal wiretapping / telecom immunity.
Did anyone really think he'd bite the hand that feeds him?
WaPo: "We stand by all versions of the story"
Sat Sep 30, 2006 at 02:18:10 PM PDT
As I noted in an earlier posting on
All Spin Zone, there is a link for emailing the reporters on the Washington Post story. So I took the opportunity to email them. Here's the almost immediate reply I received (edited only to remove responder's name and contact information, and to spamproof ASZ's email address):
Of Torture, Bankruptcy, and Spineless Vichy Democrats
Fri Sep 29, 2006 at 09:01:32 AM PDT
We're all painfully aware that the torture bill passed the senate yesterday evening by a comfortable margin. The handwriting had been on the wall for a couple of days. As the debate wore on, it was increasingly clear that the Democratic Party would not put up much of a fight against the effort to codify all forms of torture, provide immunity (retroactively) against war crimes prosecution (in the U.S.) for those who authorized or engaged in torture, and gut the fundamental right of habeas corpus.
Then, when the kabuki theatre surrounding the torture bill was reaching a climax, I felt a sense of deja vu all over again, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Follow me below the jump - because I figured out what was bugging me...
Bush Regime WON'T ALLOW TORTURE - Of Its Own Terrorist
Thu Sep 28, 2006 at 11:24:47 AM PDT
...in fact, they're getting ready to set him loose.

With the ongoing torture debate in full heated swing today, and habeous corpus being gutted like a fattened turkey at Thanksgiving, it's appropriate to revisit the story of a terror suspect who was living in high style in the U.S. - until some noise was made, and the Bush administration had no choice but to haul him in. Then, they wouldn't complete an extradition request
because he might be tortured.
Torture and Religion: To Atrios and Digby, with respect
Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 08:16:51 AM PDT
[Note: Atrios is on a friggin' torture tear today, as is Digby and other progressive bloggers. They are wondering why the religous wing of the Democratic Party (see: Obama, Barak and Lieberman, Joe) won't stand up and say, "torture is a bad thing and the antithesis of American values." At the risk of being repetitive, I'm reposting an article I wrote this past weekend. Let's cut through the crap - this is why the holy rollers of the Democratic Party and the whole of the congressional GOP caucus won't stand up to the torture bill.]
While doing a little research on the issue of torture, and in the midst of writing still another post on the namby pamby Democratic Party response to legalizing torture (or, providing cover for Bush regime crimes already committed, take your pick) I ran into an interesting Pew Research poll from late 2005 on the subject of torture. You want to know why this is all of a sudden a hot topic in the halls of congress, just prior to the mid-term elections? Take a gander at this:

Armitage threatened Pakistan into post-9/11 cooperation
Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 06:25:18 AM PDT
The past few weeks have brought stories of Pakistan cutting deals with the Taliban, Osama bin-Forgotten dialing up Century 21 agents in Warizistan, and George Bush threatening to take his warren terra directly into Pakistan without the Pakistan government's approval.
This morning, we learn how Pakistan was goaded into becoming (on paper) a "partner in the warren terra" - they were threatened to be bombed back into the stone age by a high ranking Bush administration official - none other than Bob Novak's alleged Plame source, Richard Armitage.
PA Sen: The Year of Living Politically Dangerously
Thu Sep 21, 2006 at 05:51:40 AM PDT
Fellow Philly blogger Chris Bowers at MyDD
articulates something that's been nagging at me:
Is it just me? Are other people feeling as though this election is kind of quiet and dull? If so, does anyone know how we can try to snap out of it? How can we get the same energy out of our activists in 2006 that we got in 2004? Or is a mid-term election, even one with a real prospect for changing control of Congress, just not going to be as exciting as a close Presidential election with high turnout in a polarized environment during a war?
Chris is asking some tough questions, particularly for those of us in the Philadelphia area. I think I know the answer, and it might be a bit of a bitter pill to swallow.

Pssst, Let's Get Kinky (w/poll)
Wed Sep 20, 2006 at 02:44:43 PM PDT
It's getting close to the time of year when voter registration closes in many states. Bob Fertik at democrats.com suggests that you verify your registration now, so that you have the opportunity to correct any errors (or get yourself registered) before time is up.
I'll go one further - email everyone on your personal spam list, and encourage them to do so, as well. They'll thank you for it!
How can you check your registration? It's easy, and you can do it online! The kink...errr...link is below the fold...
Quit Thinking Like a Democrat!!!!
Mon Sep 18, 2006 at 04:57:34 AM PDT
Yesterday, Jerome a Paris provided a
well written, technical, market-based explanation for the rapid drop in gasoline prices over the past few weeks. It's an article of faith for many Kossaks that, when it comes to energy issues, Jerome is the go-to guy.
Without passing judgement on the merits of his explanation, I have the following message for all residents of the reality-based community:
Quit thinking like a Democrat!!!
UPDATED - The SHAC7 Case and Terrorists in Our Midst
Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 09:04:55 AM PDT
First they came for the animal rights activists...
This is one of those stories where I'm not even sure where to begin, because I'm still quickly working to bring myself up to speed. As tuned in as I am to civil liberties issues, it amazes me that the SHAC7 case has escaped my notice. More of that "liberal media" inaction (sic), I suppose.
You need to know that this diary isn't about animal rights activism, though - it's about your political blogging freedom, what you can say online, and what you can't. Much more on this precedent-setting case below the flip...
NC-8: Thank a Democrat for Lower Gas Prices (w/poll!)
Sat Sep 16, 2006 at 08:32:45 AM PDT
It's been hard not to notice that gasoline prices have dropped significantly over the past couple of weeks. The cost of a gallon of regular grade gas peaked just before Labor Day, at around $3.10 in my neck of the woods. Since that time, the price has dropped nearly $1 a gallon in some places (there's an Exxon station off of exit 10 on I-295 in New Jersey that's running $2.16 right now).
All of this is kind of weird, considering the price of a barrel of oil hasn't dropped nearly as much, percentage wise, as a gallon of refined gasoline. So I got to thinking. Why? In a water cooler conversation with a group of knuckle-dragging neocons at work, even they knew the answer: the upcoming election.
But what was the dynamic that caused this? More after the jump...
CT Sen: Lieberman (CFL-Ct) Submarines Lamont (D-Ct)
Fri Sep 15, 2006 at 07:24:29 AM PDT
or, The Power of Incumbency
When I was stationed in Connecticut in the late 70's / early 80's, General Dynamics - Electric Boat Division was by far the largest private industry employer in the southeastern part of the state. EB builds submarines. With the cold war long ended, there hasn't been a lot of submarine building going on in Connecticut for the past 20 or so years.
Still, with a chance to submarine Democratic Party senate candidate Ned Lamont, our least favorite Republican from Connecticut took action to feed the war machine once again, even when the Navy didn't want it.

We Are Less Safe: A Broken Military and Terrorists Enabled...
Thu Sep 14, 2006 at 06:57:28 PM PDT
The
Project for Defense Alternatives (PDA) this week issued three briefing reports on national security and military readiness issues that are extremely troubling by any measure. It's hard to spin these assessments as anything but bleak:
In examining terrorism post-9/11, the PDA determined:
Overall, terrorist activity and violence has grown worse, not better since 11 September 2001. Average levels of terrorist violence that would have been considered extreme in the period prior to 9/11 have become the norm in the years since. And there is no sign that this trend is abating. This much is evident from a review of the terrorism incident database maintained by the Rand Corporation for the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT), which is funded by the US Department of Homeland Security...
"Path to 9/11" - The Dem Players Who Didn't Come to the Table
Wed Sep 13, 2006 at 07:11:10 AM PDT
It's a bit early to say whether ABC's huge corporate mistake, "Path to 9/11", was a success or failure in the ratings, although overnight Nielsen results seem to indicate it was, at best,
a tepid ratings success:
ABC's Path to 9/11 got a lot of pre-broadcast buzz for its controversial treatment of the Clinton administration, but it managed only a third-place finish for the night.
But that's not what I want to focus on in this post mortem - I want to talk about the Democratic Party players who didn't come to the table when they were needed...
9/11 - My final words - I will neither forgive or forget
Tue Sep 12, 2006 at 05:40:44 AM PDT
Yesterday, the National Broadcasting Corporation was the antithesis of the American Broadcasting Corporation. From
Matt Lauer's testy interview with George Bush on the Today Show (Matt's been "unleashed" since Katie left the show...), to Keith Olbermann's
stunning rant immediately prior to Bush's propaganda speech yesterday evening - NBC put their corporate balls on the table.
Kyoto: One Reason We're Much Less Safe Under GOP
Mon Sep 11, 2006 at 09:49:50 AM PDT
On this fifth anniversary of 9/11/01, we can argue all day as to whether or not the U.S. is safer today than we were five years ago. We can point fingers of blame to and fro, at Clinton and Bush the Elder and Bush the Lesser, and still not come to a national concensus. Five years after the fact, it doesn't seem to me that it much matters anymore, and I'm not going to get into an insurance adjuster's mindset when it comes to assigning "blame". What's the point, anyway?
But to answer the question "are we safer?", and (by extension) has the GOP made us safer, I'm not going to even consider terrorism in the equation. Jump below to find out why...
