A tweet from Steve Schale earlier today directed me to a Politico cover story that I might otherwise would have missed, since I’m not a Politico enthusiast. We don’t often get to read “rags to riches” stories that include striking up a lasting friendship with the President of the United States, but this one from Jonathan Goldsmith will (I promise) tickle you. A bit long, but well worth the time invested.
“Damn,” he said in a half-hushed whisper. “This guy’s good.”
I could hear President Obama as he walked up the path behind me and spied the multiple arrows I had placed, undetected, in the bull's-eye. I waited until I could sense him close by. Then, with the casual swagger that had become my calling card, I turned, and feigning annoyance, delivered the line I had prepared:
“What took you so long?”
Obama, recognizing me immediately, clapped his hands and doubled over in laughter. There’s no way he could have been as happy and amazed as I was to be there.
This is an immensely entertaining and inspiring story, captured in a moment when we need positivism.
I suppose the moral of the story is to stick with it even when things suck. The change / hero / chance you seek might be right around the corner at any age. Life comes at you fast when you least expect it (and I mean that in a very upbeat sense in this case).
After reading this Politico article, I tweeted Steve:
Steve responded:
It might be true. If you’re in a betting parlor this weekend, put your money on Steve.
